Tempe Law Against Texting and Driving

Tempe passed a new ordinance that can fine drivers who use electronic devices while driving.

Drivers can still talk on the phone and text, however police may fine drivers who appear distracted, who are swerving, driving erratically, or driving with a phone in their hand.

Arguments in favor of the ordinance state that it saves lives, that the number of accidents will go down, particularly among young drivers.

Opponents argue that some Tempe drivers would be unaware of the law and that other cities do not have similar laws.

There is no statewide texting law in Arizona. 46 states have bannedtexting and driving and 14 prohibit talking on the phone while driving.
